Spring 2025 Artist in Residency: Jackie Camardo

" I find inspiration in the way cultures appreciate life’s simplest pleasures, like a shared meal or a quiet moment at sunset. It’s these little, fleeting experiences that ignite my creativity and shape my work." - Jackie Camardo

Tell us your story in your own words

"I grew up on the near west side of Chicago, in Little Italy, living in a multi-generational
building that has housed my family for four generations. My family, who settled here from southern Italy, has deeply influenced my identity as an Italian-American. The values of family, food, and living life to the fullest are at the core of who I am, and I’m proud to continue this tradition with my own family. I live in this neighborhood today, caring for my 96-year-old nana, Eleanor, and I'm planning my wedding in Rome with my Italian fiancé, which feels like a full-circle moment. I’ve also had the incredible experience of traveling to Italy many times, living in Italy for a summer, spending time with family there which further shaped my perspective on life and creativity."

What inspires you?

"I’m inspired by the beauty and aesthetics of the world around me — whether it’s through art, design, or the cultures I encounter. Travel and the exploration of different places hold a special place in my heart. I find inspiration in the way cultures appreciate life’s simplest pleasures, like a shared meal or a quiet moment at sunset. It’s these little, fleeting experiences that ignite my creativity and shape my work."

How do you spend your Sunday?

"Sundays are a day for slowing down and connecting with loved ones. I start the day with a long walk with my dog and fiancé, always making a stop for a coffee. The afternoon is spent with family, usually cooking a big, hearty dinner and dining outside if the weather’s right. We enjoy wine and conversation, taking our time and savoring each other’s company. It’s a peaceful way to reset before the week ahead."

What is your perfect Sunset?

"My perfect sunset would be somewhere on the Mediterranean, with the warm glow of the sun casting a golden hue over the sea. I’d be sipping a glass of wine or a spritz, while snacking on olives, with the gentle scent of saltwater in the air. It’s a moment of stillness, soaking in the beauty of nature and the joy of good company."

What are you most excited to archive this Spring?

"This spring, I’m most excited to share a piece of La Dolce Vita — the sweet life that I
cherish from my heritage and travels. Spring holds such a special meaning to me, with
its fresh energy, blooming flowers, and moments of quiet reflection. It’s a time to
embrace the beauty of new beginnings, much like the Italian way of slowing down and
savoring the simple things in life. Through my art, I hope to inspire others to connect with this season’s essence, finding joy in the little pleasures of everyday life."

Tell us about your Spring bucket list.

"My Spring bucket list includes soaking up the sunshine, making time for more travel,
and connecting with my heritage. I’m excited to create new memories with my fiancé and family, whether it’s a trip or just a spontaneous day out in Chicago. I’m also looking forward to continuing my residency with Sunday to Sunset and diving deeper into my creative journey."
